Every July, all of Mongolia celebrates Naadam. It is one of the oldest sports festivals in the world. Its three main games are wrestling, horse racing, and archery.
Mongolian wrestlers wear special open jackets and perform an eagle dance before each match. The horse races are run by young riders across the open steppe, sometimes for thirty kilometers. In archery, both men and women compete, shooting at small leather targets.
Naadam began as training for soldiers many centuries ago. Today it is a national holiday full of songs, food, and family visits. If you ever visit Mongolia in summer, Naadam is the best place to feel its spirit.
